Growing up, my friends and I played a lot of strategy games. In the 2010s we had a games page for all kinds of games, and if I’m not mistaken, all games in the strategy category have been at the top of the list for months. Most strategy games revolve around a historical period and the main goal is to defeat the enemy.
In 2014, a game set in the Napoleonic era called “European War 4: Napoleon” was presented to the public. The game takes place in the 18th and 19th centuries and the map is made up of European, American and Mediterranean African countries. It is a turn-based war strategy game, which means that each player takes his turn, making sure the move gives him the maximum advantage.
Story
“European War 4: Napoleon” offers us the opportunity to visit and learn about the conflicts in America and Europe. Players can control and lead the armies of any country, such as France, Spain or Great Britain, with each side having their own special troops and units.
The game is fairly easy to understand with a hex based strategy game. It is each player’s turn to play and all they have to do is click on the soldiers they want and select where they want them to go. The terrain of the hedges affects the movement of units and sometimes players can build new military units that can be captured.

The gameplay is simple
There are six campaigns in total, and two of them were unlocked from the start. In the first two, players can play as France or an alliance fighting France. Additionally, each campaign takes place in different locations around the world so players don’t feel repetitive.
As mentioned above, during the fight, players take turns making moves to get the most out of the fight. When the players have finished their turn, they press a button to move on to the next turn (even if it’s a bit small and hard to see). They must manage and maintain the economy and armed forces of the chosen country. To defeat enemies, players can build cities, seaports, arsenals, and more. As many buildings are being built, it is imperative that players have strategic plans to protect them and keep them completely intact.
By conquering towns and cities, players can generate resources: food, money, and car parts. Farmland and agriculture related products give you food that military units use per turn, money and parts can be used to buy and upgrade units and build cities or fortresses. By gathering resources, your economy will continue to thrive, allowing you to build a strong army and fight against opponents.
Units and generals
Units are created in cities and are divided into three types: artillery, cavalry and infantry. An artillery unit can attack from a distance, is good in attack, but weak in defense. The cavalry is in the center and can move two spaces.
The better your city, the better the units you can build. Also, if you want stable and well-built units, you can use gold to get troops (lives) for them. There is something to learn about the combat system: units can move and attack freely, but once the attack is finished, they cannot move (except when some generals are involved).
Another important feature is that generals can be equipped with units, giving them combat bonuses and surrounding units with smaller bonuses. There are more than 200 real generals of that time, each of them having different skills and upgrades for the army. Generals are an integral part of combat and without general command units they will fall apart, so be sure to protect your generals when they are low on energy.
To go into battle
The combat is slow, there isn’t a lot of action, and nothing special happens. Since the game does not take place in real time, it is important for players to plan their strategies before starting. Only after completing a move can players know what the opponent is doing.
During the game, players can ignore the enemy division and protect their own. Supporting a division means attacking it from two opposite sides. In this way, the morale of the division will decrease and the enemy will lose more energy in the next attack.
Conquest mode and campaign mode
In the conquest mode, you can choose the country you want from the game, defeat all your enemies and conquer the whole map. There are different war scenarios and different time periods to choose from. Games in Conquest mode can take hours, be tiring and boring, but you can save your progress and come back when you’ve cooled down. In campaign mode, players must complete objectives within a certain number of rounds.
If you win a conquest mode within 65 rounds, you can dominate Europe or challenge Asia. Players can get Austrian, British, French, Russian and Ottoman princesses, but more are added every year. The same happens when you decide to challenge Asia, you get Chinese and Japanese princesses.
